Agadir, Morocco - View on map
Description
In every city of the Kingdom, the ancient medinas are the guardians of the history of Moroccan civilization. Deprived of its old town by the 1960 earthquake, Agadir touched the heart of Beato Salvatore, known as Coco Polizzi. Driven by a fervent ambition, he began the work on this monumental project in 1992.
A Traditional Reconstruction
This is a true miniature medina built with traditional methods inspired by ancestral constructions, using materials mainly sourced from the region: white stone from Agadir, red stone from Argana, green slate from Anzi, ochre earth from Taliouine, eucalyptus and laurel wood, and much more.
An Architectural Masterpiece
The architectural aspect is based on decorative details and forms, ranging from narrow alleys, workshops, niches, and windows, to spacious patios, squares, and an amphitheater. This architectural masterpiece, inspired by Arab, Amazigh, Andalusian, Greek, and Roman cultures, magnificently showcases the artisanal expertise of the region.
The Work of Master Artisans
As you wander through the narrow streets and traverse the beautiful arcade galleries, you will discover the skill of the master artisans, the "Maâlems", under the artistic and technical direction of Coco Polizzi. Admire the passageways, Amazigh wooden carved doors, wrought iron scrolls, mashrabiyas, carved stones, Roman mosaics, colorful stained glass, and Amazigh mosaic rugs.
Preservation of Heritage
The Medina of Agadir carries an intrinsic mission of safeguarding Amazigh cultural and architectural heritage and transmitting ancestral know-how. A visit to the Medina of Agadir is an immersion into Moroccan history and craftsmanship, an unforgettable experience celebrating the richness and diversity of local culture.
